New community solar farms approved in Halfmoon

Halfmoon will soon have two new community solar farms!

The Halfmoon Planning Board recently approved our Bridgewater and Bridgewater 2 projects. They will each have a capacity of 7.5 MW which will generate enough green power for about 1,225 average-sized homes. When it comes to carbon savings, this is comparable to absorbing nearly 310,000 pounds of CO2 each year (Source: EPA).

Construction for this project is set to begin this spring. These community solar farms will be owned and operated by Solar Farms New York and be part of NYSERDA’s Expanded Solar-for-All program, designed to deliver the benefits of community solar to low-income customers. By subscribing to this community solar farm, residents can save 10% on their electricity bills while supporting their local community, healthy pollinator habitats, and a clean energy future - a collective saving of over $300,000 for the whole community. Like all of our sites in the Capital District, the Halfmoon solar farms will include wildflower meadows to provide habitats for bees and other pollinators habitats. Beehives on site will offer pollination services that support local farmers. Nesting boxes will be installed along the perimeter to allow birds and bats places to rest. Ecological surveys will be conducted annually to track and continuously improve the site.

The projects established an annual education fund of $3,000 for Waterford-Halfmoon Central School District-- $2,000 towards site visits and in-school workshops and $1,000 towards the Green STEAM Scholarship--to encourage and support student interest in STEM subjects. The addition of Bridgewater and Bridgewater 2 makes a total of 19 community solar farms approved across the greater Capital Region. Learn more about our solar projects.
