Third community solar project approved in Schodack
The Town of Schodack Planning Board recently approved our third community solar project. Similarly to its preceding sister projects, White River Solar will have a capacity of 7.5 MW, enough to generate clean energy for about 1,225 average-sized homes, equivalent to planting 10,000 trees (Source: EPA).
Altogether, our community solar projects in Schodack will produce enough clean energy to power about 70% of the homes. Before commencing construction, priority subscriptions will be offered to Schodack residents, saving them 10% on their annual electricity bill. In 2020, the average New York homeowner spends about $108/month on electricity. If Schodack residents fill all three sites, the town can save up to $476,280 annually (Source: NYSERDA). Like all of our sites in the Capital Region , White River will have wildflower meadows which will provide bees and other pollinators habitats to thrive in. Beehives will also be placed on the site to provide pollination service to support local farmers and help sustain the state’s $500 million agricultural industry. Nesting boxes will be installed along the perimeter to allow birds and bats places to rest. Ecological surveys will be conducted annually to track and continuously improve the site.
The site will also add $2,000 towards site visits and in-school workshops and $1,000 towards Green STEM Scholarship, increasing the education fund to $9,000 annually for the Schodack Central School District. Learn more about our education program.
This is our eighth community solar project approved in the Capital Region. The other seven projects in Duanesburg, Glen, Schaghticoke and Schodack are scheduled to break ground sometime next year, subject to the pandemic. For site specific details, go to Solar Projects.
