RENEWABLE ENERGY AROUND THE WORLD: Mapping Your School Using Google Earth

Grade level: 3-8

Students learn how to navigate Google Earth by finding their school and examining the grounds. They learn how to locate areas of the school on their map, and use the map to plan a route around the school. They compare their hand-drawn maps to what they see on Google Earth.


RENEWABLE ENERGY AROUND THE WORLD: Solar Farms on LI and Warwick School District Using Google Earth

Students explore two solar farms, a Long Island Solar Farm and a solar field at a public school in Warwick, NY. They use Google Earth tools to calculate the acreage of the solar fields by outlining the areas of the farm where the panels are located.

Students explore their school grounds to test their predictions as to where to put solar panels. Using the maps from Lesson 1, students and their teacher map out a route around the school in order to test all student predictions.

Students draw a map of their school and surroundings adding features that make the community special. They predict where solar panels could be located at the school and mark their predictions on the map.
